  11.  This is a list of some good PWADs for the games DOOM and DOOM 2 that I've
  12.  had the chance to play in single mode using a DOS 486DX2/66MHz PC system. I
  13.  rate the works with Very good, Excellent and Masterpiece.

  16.  About id, DOOM and PWAD
  17.  
  18.  If you don't know what id Software or DOOM is, you are missing a lot in
  19.  respect to computer games. For info you can check the newsgroup hierarchy
  20.  news:rec.games.computer.doom.* and id website http://www.idsoftware.com.
  21.  PWADs or Patch WADs are external files that can change the level maps,
  22.  graphics, sounds and music in the commercial versions of DOOM and DOOM 2.
  23.  Here are some archives that made id the best, shareware versions of the
  24.  classics Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM plus a compilation of game screenshots:

  30.  Troubleshooting

  32.  In order to run any PWAD you must have a registered and unmodified DOS
  33.  version of DOOM or DOOM 2. Running PWADs is as simple as typing in the
  34.  command prompt the executable, doom.exe or doom2.exe with the parameter
  35.  -file followed by filename.wad. Things can get more complicated because of
  36.  different game versions, various editors and the complexity of some PWADs,
  37.  if you come across any kind of trouble, read the docs included in the
  38.  archive, if that doesn't help, try the news:rec.games.computer.doom.help
  39.  newsgroup or email the author.

  42.  PWAD availability
  43.  
  44.  The best way to get PWADs is by the Internet File Transfer Protocol at
  45.  ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/levels, in here you can find the biggest
  46.  collection available. Due to its popularity, this archive is mirrored to
  47.  other sites around the world, so for faster connections try the nearest to
  48.  you. If you prefer a Bulletin Board System you can reach Software Creations
  49.  BBS with 16.8kb lines at the phone number 508-368-7036 or by telnet to
  50.  telnet://swcbbs.com; in file directories 161 and 171 of this BBS their are
  51.  some of the selections. CDROMs compilations with thousands of PWADs have
  52.  also been made exclusively for this:
  53.  Master Levels CD - Published by id Software, includes exclusive and
  54.  home-brew PWADs for DOOM and DOOM2. Info at <http://www.gtinteractive.com>.
  55.  DOOM Toolkit - Published by Walnut Creek CDROM, features most of
  56.  ftp.cdrom.com/idgames archive. More info at <http://www.cdrom.com>.
  57.  D!Zone - Published by WizardWorks, it works with a shell that converts
  58.  PWADs for DOOM to DOOM2. More info at <http://www.wizworks.com>.
